Well it's a week after I began this book, and as promised, I'm giving you all an update. I found the first 20 or so pages a bit tricky to read; there seemed to be so many different characters and all with very unfamiliar Italian names. The publishers must have realised this and have provided an Index of Characters at the beginning. I've had to consult it several times!
Anyway, I now realise the story is being narrated by Elena, also known as Lenuccia or Lenu. (Can you understand my confusion?) Elena is now in her 70's but she is sharing memories of her childhood growing up in a small village in Italy. The memories mainly focus on her uneasy friendship with a wild, but very clever girl called, Lila. (The daughter of a shoe-maker). Anyway, I'm hooked now. The book is bringing back memories of some of the joys and difficulties of growing up: finding the right friend, doing well at school, being afraid of parents and teachers and discovering boys! All this is told in the most beautiful way and set in the most beautiful place. I want to go to a town like this one day. Anyway, things are getting really interesting now. There's a boy, and Elena likes him very much, but is he interested in her or her best friend? That's all for now.

Hi everyone, I've created this blog page where we can share thoughts about what we're reading and learn some blogging skills at the same time!
Today, I've asked you to commit to reading a book over this term break. I want you to post a comment about the book you've chosen, why it interests you any other interesting details. Try to provide a picture of the cover if you can. I'll show you how. To keep it even, I'll commit to reading one here too! I first heard about this book 2 years ago. I have a friend living in Italy who liked it on facebook. I then read about it again in the Feature article I gave you about Grit. I started it last night, and I'm hooked already!
